Be Different Plant Blueberries
Be different and grow blueberries
Express; Echo; Exeter (UK), Jul 31, 2010
IF you have a small garden but want to try something different, compact varieties of blueberries such as Sunshine Blue and Top Hat are ideal for growing in a pot.
Plant them in spring in large tubs filled with ericaceous compost along with a little added grit, and water them with rain water if you are eco-friendly enough to have a water butt, as they don’t like the lime in tap water.
Feed with a liquid fertiliser for acid-loving plants every couple of weeks during the growing season and give them a helping of seaweed extract from time to time to promote healthy growth.
The berries will be ready for harvesting from July to September when they have turned to a rich deep blue-black colour and are slightly soft to the touch.
